Laser marking and laser engraving - customized machine solutions

Laser marking

Laser marking is a process used in a wide variety of industries for marking, applying serial numbers and anti-counterfeiting of products. Our laser machines or laser modules are available as integrated solutions or as stand-alone systems. A wide range of laser types and laser modules can be used for laser marking.

Applications for laser marking

Typical applications in laser marking and laser engraving are permanent marking and coding (serialization using 2D and 3D barcodes) on products, packaging and components. These include:

  • Barcodes
  • QR codes
  • data matrix codes
  • serial numbers
  • logos
  • Symbols/Icons
  • warnings
  • graphics
  • texts
  • scales
Materials laser marking

Materials laser marking / laser engraving

According to our experience and parameters for laser marking, the most diverse materials can be marked with the laser. The spectrum ranges from copper foils, adhesive foils, fuel filters to plastics, films, ceramic components or pouches in the packaging sector.

For test purposes, prototypes and small series, we also carry out laser marking for customers as a job order in our modern laser laboratory. Likewise laser marking and engraving on special materials.

» Advantages of laser marking

No inks or other chemical components are needed, so there are no consumable costs.

The finest marking structures can be applied, including bar codes and 2D/3D matrix codes.

Very high flexibility in the marking process due to simple software control.

Very high process speeds can be achieved.

A durable and permanent marking method. This is an important requirement for reliable protection, especially in plagiarism protection.

» Laser marking - ultrafast and precise marking on different materials

The laser marking process is suitable for applying a wide variety of markings or designs to almost any material without contact and at maximum process speed. With its process-technical and cost-efficient advantages, laser marking substitutes conventional printing processes and etching engravings in many industrial sectors. Complex laser markings such as graphics or QR codes can be produced, for example for part marking, traceability or counterfeit protection.

Laser marking process

Depending on the objective, marking lasers or laser marking machines from MLT are used for different marking applications and equipped with appropriate technology. Here are the common processes:

Annealing marking

In the case of annealing marking by means of laser marking, the laser does not remove any material, but rather achieves a color change through an oxide layer by means of high-precision heating. This process is used for metals (metal foils) such as steel.

Laser engraving

Laser marking by engraving is suitable for almost all materials. In the process, a microfine layer of the surface of the material is removed by the marking laser. A depression is created at this point, which changes color depending on the material and thus makes the laser engraving even more visible.

Material and color removal

This laser marking process is used for cardboard, labels, painted materials and anodized aluminum. In this process, the laser is used to laser away the ink, varnish and top layers at a defined depth down to the color-distinguishable base layer.

Color change

For plastics and plastic films, laser marking can be used to achieve a color change in combination with a tangible foaming effect.

Carbonizing

Carbonizing by laser is used for light-colored plastics and materials such as paper, cardboard, wood. With carbonizing, a dark discoloration is achieved at the marked areas by the laser.
